Can't believe that colorful stuff the children were working on was snow? It was. We have been harnessing the natural resources available to us right outside our doors this winter, especially when more than 45 inches of snow have fallen from the skies to date and glistening icicles crown our school. The activities we offer the children are limited only by the children's and our collective creativity.
Outdoors, imagination soars as children navigate the massive terrain that snow piles offer and skirt the crunchy, white grounds for sparkling icicles and chunks of meteorite-looking ice. The tunnels older children have dug and carved through the mounds of snow offer our children fresh perspectives and physical challenges. Sliding down the hill on one's belly is still a popular activity. Eating ice and snow from the ground is highly discouraged. Still, a handful of children munch on clumps of snow and swallow them very quickly when spotted. A visit from a flock of geese added special interest this past week. Clearly, Mother Nature richly rewards the children for all the time and effort they expend to get ready to play with her in winter.
